According to one medical Web site, consuming massive amounts of water too quickly can result in a rare condition called water intoxication. Excess water enters the body's cells, causing them to swell. The swelling puts pressure on the brain and nerves, which can result in seizures, coma and ultimately death. Its effects can mimic those of alcohol poisoning.
